CLOUD MIGRATION GUIDE

What a cloud migration really costs

Every cloud provider offers a pricing calculator, and every calculator produces a number smaller than your eventual bill. Not because the calculators lie, but because they price the destination and skip the trip. Here's the full cost picture, one-time and monthly, with the lines that surprise people flagged.

The one-time costs the calculators skip

The monthly delta

Compare honestly: the cloud bill against everything the server actually cost, which is more than people remember. Hardware amortization, power and cooling, backup licensing, the maintenance share of your IT spend, and replacement risk. A closet server "costing nothing" is usually costing $500 to $1,500 a month once counted. Cloud replaces that with subscriptions and compute that scale with use, plus items the closet never charged for: per-user platform licensing you may already own anyway, cloud backup, and monitoring.

The egress line, explained once

Cloud providers charge little to store data and meaningfully to pull it back out over the internet, commonly around $90 per terabyte. Day to day it's noise. It bites in three scenarios: full restores pulled down at volume, workflows that constantly round-trip big files to local machines (see when on-prem wins), and someday leaving the provider. Price all three per terabyte of your data before signing, and treat egress as the exit fee it functionally is. A provider who won't discuss exit costs plainly is answering a different question than the one you asked.

After the move, two habits decide the bill

Cloud bills drift upward by default: oversized instances, orphaned disks, forgotten test environments. The fix is a monthly cost review, twenty minutes, plus a right-sizing pass each quarter. It's routine, it's boring, and it routinely finds 20 to 40 percent. The tactics live in how we shrink cloud bills, and the habit belongs in the month-two checklist.

Bottom line: for most small businesses, the cloud costs more per month than the closet's sticker and less per year than the closet's truth, with the gap decided by whether anyone watches the bill. The businesses that regret migrating are mostly the ones that treated the move as the finish line.

Want this handled instead of homeworked? That's the job.
